India’s World Cup-winning women’s cricket team is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi following their historic triumph.
The team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, secured the global title by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final held in Navi Mumbai. This victory marks the first time in history that the Indian women’s team has won the World Cup.
The squad is currently in Mumbai and will travel to the national capital for the special meeting with the Prime Minister, which is anticipated to take place on Wednesday.
Following the team’s achievement, PM Modi had shared a congratulatory message on social media, describing the win as “spectacular” and praising the players’ skill, confidence, exceptional teamwork, and tenacity throughout the tournament. He also expressed hope that the historic win would inspire future athletes.
In recognition of their achievement, the BCCI has already announced a cash reward of ₹51 crore for the players and support staff.
While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is thrilled with the victory, the final plans for a potential victory parade or an official felicitation ceremony are still under discussion. Senior BCCI officials are attending ICC meetings in Dubai from November 4 to 7, and decisions regarding a large-scale public celebration will be finalized after their return. The BCCI Secretary noted that the team has not just won a trophy, but has “won the hearts of all Indians,” signaling a “new dawn” for women’s cricket in the country.
