Veteran actor R. Madhavan recently commented on the significant shift he has witnessed in the global perception of Indian men, particularly by women in Western countries, attributing the change to India’s growing international profile.
In a candid interview, the actor contrasted his experiences traveling abroad from previous decades to the present day. Madhavan recalled that in the past, when he and other Indian men would frequent international bars or social venues, non-Indian women would often view them with skepticism. He suggested that their reaction implied an assumption that Indian men were solely present with the intent to “hit on them.”
Madhavan asserted that this social dynamic has dramatically changed. He observed that now, when an Indian man enters a similar setting, the reaction is often one of genuine interest and respect. He claimed that he now sees multiple women, specifically “white women,” approaching Indian men, often under the assumption that they are successful, high-profile entrepreneurs—a clear reflection of India’s economic growth story.
The actor connected this real-life observation to his professional aspirations. He noted that he has yet to see this contemporary, respected image of the Indian male accurately portrayed in mainstream cinema, where foreign women approach an Indian man rather than avoid him.
Madhavan expressed a desire to work with emerging directors who are willing to move past the traditional conventions, or “filmyness,” of the industry. He is eager to combine his experience with a new generation’s refined storytelling that genuinely reflects the nation’s current standing and growth.
