Six Pilgrims Killed After Being Struck by Express Train at Chunar Station
MIRZAPUR, UTTAR PRADESH – A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday morning at Chunar railway station in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, when a speeding express train ran over a group of pilgrims, resulting in the deaths of six people and leaving several others severely injured.
The victims were devotees traveling to Varanasi for the sacred Kartik Purnima bath and rituals. The incident took place when the pilgrims, having arrived on a local train at Platform No. 4, attempted to cross the railway tracks as a shortcut to reach Platform No. 3. They were hit by the Kalka-bound Netaji Express, which was passing through the junction at high speed and did not have a scheduled stop at Chunar. Railway authorities later confirmed that the passengers had bypassed the designated foot overbridge.
Following the devastating collision, railway officials and local police rushed to the scene. The injured were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Official Response and Relief Measures
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate notice of the tragedy, expressing deep sorrow and offering his condolences to the bereaved families.
He issued directives for senior officials to promptly visit the site and accelerate relief operations. Furthermore, the Chief Minister instructed teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist in rescue efforts and ensure that the injured received comprehensive medical care.
The Chief Minister also confirmed that a probe into the circumstances of the incident has been ordered. Despite the accident, railway operations at Chunar Junction reportedly remained unaffected.
