Launch of City of Dreams Sri Lanka: A New Era for South Asia Tourism

The City of Dreams Sri Lanka launched on August 2, 2025, becoming South Asia’s first integrated resort. Located on the Colombo waterfront, this landmark project is a joint venture between Sri Lankan conglomerate John Keells Holdings (JKH) and global entertainment giant Melco Resorts & Entertainment.

The complex is designed to redefine luxury and hospitality in the region, featuring:

  • Accommodation: An 800-room luxury hotel complex, including the 687-key Cinnamon Life hotel and the ultra-luxury 113-key Nüwa hotel, Melco’s flagship brand.
  • Facilities: A state-of-the-art casino operated by Melco, a premium shopping promenade, a collection of 17 signature dining experiences, and expansive MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) facilities.

🗣️ Insights from the Leaders

Krishan Balendra (Chairman and CEO of JKH) and Lawrence Ho (Chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts & Entertainment) discussed the vision for the project:

  • Inspiration: Balendra stated that the project was conceptualized over a decade ago after the civil war ended, recognizing the massive opportunity for tourism and the lack of a venue in Colombo for big events and conferences. The success of integrated resorts in places like Singapore and Macau inspired them to bring a similar concept, including the gaming element, to South Asia.
  • The Partnership: Balendra explained that JKH partnered with Melco because gaming was not their core expertise, and they sought a “best in class operator.” Ho emphasized the importance of having the best partner in a new market, praising JKH for their similar philosophies on hospitality.
  • Market Impact: Both leaders highlighted the significant opportunity for tourism growth, particularly from India, which is already the largest source market for Sri Lanka. Ho noted that the resort’s key appeal is being the first and only true integrated resort in South Asia, setting it apart from older, traditional casino facilities in the region.
  • Hotel Strategy: Balendra noted that Nüwa would cater to higher-end customers, especially those coming for the gaming experience, while Cinnamon Life will serve a broader segment.
