Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake: Gameplay Leaks Hint at January 2026 Launch

Ubisoft’s highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is reportedly targeting a release in mid-January 2026, following a lengthy and complicated development cycle. Fans of the 2003 classic can look forward to a potential official announcement, including a new trailer and a concrete launch date, at The Game Awards event this December.

Key Details from the Leaked Footage

The speculation surrounding the game’s progress stems from a confidential 10-minute presentation created in 2024 that briefly appeared online before being removed. The footage revealed several significant updates and creative decisions for the modernized title:

  • Engine Change: The remake is now being developed using the Assassin’s Creed engine.
  • Character Rework: The character Farah has undergone a major transformation. Instead of being portrayed as a damsel in distress, the remake describes her as a cold-hearted, strong-willed, and highly trained 19-year-old archer who is preparing to take on the role of Queen.
  • New Mechanics: The game will incorporate additional time-manipulation abilities, including a power that allows the Prince to freeze enemies during combat.
  • Development Status: The leaked clip showcased a mix of alpha-stage gameplay and live motion capture scenes, suggesting that development is “deep” and making considerable headway.

A Challenging Development Timeline

The path to this remake has been arduous since its initial announcement. The project was first unveiled in 2020 with an expected release in January 2021. However, it was delayed indefinitely in early 2021. In May 2022, Ubisoft transferred the project from its Indian studios to the Montreal team. Reports indicate the game was ultimately scrapped and completely restarted in 2023 to address prior issues.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is planned for release on modern consoles and PC, specifically PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
