Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has issued a clear directive to the BCCI selectors, strongly advocating for the immediate return of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami to the national squad for Test, ODI, and T20 cricket, despite his recent exclusion from the upcoming series against South Africa.
Ganguly’s message comes in the wake of the selection committee’s decision to omit the 35-year-old Shami, who last played for India in March. The legendary batsman maintains that Shami’s fitness and bowling prowess remain top-tier and essential for the team.
Shami’s Skill and Fitness Unquestioned
Dismissing concerns over the pacer’s age or fitness, Ganguly pointed to Shami’s recent strong performances in domestic cricket as irrefutable proof of his readiness. He highlighted Shami’s efforts in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, where he bowled substantial overs (91 across three matches) and was instrumental in securing victories for his state team.
“Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit, and his skill level is enormous,” Ganguly stated, emphasizing that he sees “no reason” why the fast bowler shouldn’t continue to feature in all three international formats for India.
Shami, who was the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup, underwent ankle surgery after that tournament, and his recurring injury concerns may have influenced the selectors’ decision to look at newer faces like Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep in the Test arena. However, Ganguly clearly believes the veteran’s world-class ability overrides these concerns.
Jurel’s Spot in the Playing XI
In addition to his strong backing for Shami, Ganguly also weighed in on the batting unit for the Test series, suggesting that in-form wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel deserves a spot in the playing XI based on his recent performances.
While acknowledging the complexity of breaking into an established batting order featuring a returning Rishabh Pant, Ganguly suggested that the coveted No. 3 spot—currently held by Sai Sudharsan—could be an option for Jurel. The young batter has been making a strong case with recent centuries, underscoring Ganguly’s push for rewarding domestic and ‘A’ team form with a national call-up.
