Key Security Features and Tools
AI-Powered Scam Detection (Pixel Phones)
Google is introducing an advanced scam detection feature for its Pixel phones that utilizes the on-device AI model, Gemini Nano. This tool is designed to analyze phone calls in real-time and flag conversation patterns that match common scam tactics.
- On-Device Analysis: Critically, this feature operates entirely on the device, meaning no audio or transcripts are recorded or sent to Google, ensuring user privacy.
- User Controls: The tool is off by default, only applies to calls from unknown numbers, and can be disabled by the user at any time. It also plays a beep to inform all participants when it is active.
Combatting Digital Arrest Scams
In response to the growing threat of “digital arrest” and similar coercive scams, Google is piloting a new feature to protect users during screen-sharing.
- Screen-Sharing Alert: Users on Android 11 and above who attempt to share their screen with an unknown contact will receive a prominent, high-priority alert.
- One-Tap Action: The alert provides a quick, one-tap option for the user to immediately end the call and stop the screen-sharing session, preventing fraudsters from viewing sensitive information. The development of this feature involved collaboration with fintech partners, including Google Play, Navi, and Paytm.
Enhanced Phone Number Verification (ePNV)
A new Android-based security protocol, Enhanced Phone Number Verification (ePNV), is being introduced to replace less secure methods. This protocol offers a more secure, SIM-based check, moving away from the traditional, often vulnerable, reliance on SMS one-time passwords (OTPs) for identity confirmation.
Impact and Partnerships
Google highlighted existing safeguards and expanded commitments to the region:
- Fraudulent Transaction Warnings: The company stated that Google Pay is currently issuing over one million warnings per week to users regarding potentially fraudulent transactions.
- App Protection: Google Play Protect has successfully blocked over 115 million attempts by Indian users to install sideloaded apps with sensitive permissions, which are commonly abused for financial fraud.
- Strategic Collaborations: Google is strengthening its partnerships in India by expanding work with organizations such as the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras and the CyberPeace Foundation to improve digital safety and AI research.
