Volvo-Daimler Joint Venture, Coretura, Eyes Bengaluru for Major Global R&D Hub

Coretura AB, the technology joint venture established by the Volvo Group and Daimler Truck, is planning a significant expansion of its research and development operations, with India emerging as a prime location for its second global R&D center.

The joint venture, focused on pioneering the next generation of commercial vehicle technology, is strongly considering Bengaluru as the site for this new facility. The city’s vast pool of expertise in software and embedded engineering has positioned it as the front-runner for the investment.

Scaling and Talent Acquisition

Coretura’s leadership sees India as a crucial component of its long-term growth strategy. According to CEO Johan Lundén, the country’s talent and competency ecosystem is “extremely attractive.”

The company, which began operations in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026, currently employs between 50 and 60 individuals globally. It has ambitious plans to scale its total workforce to between 450 and 600 employees by 2030. If the Bengaluru facility is established, it is anticipated to employ 100 to 150 people over time.

Coretura is already integrating Indian talent, with nine Indian engineers currently working at its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, and more expected to join its global team.

Focus on Software-Defined Vehicles

The core mission of Coretura is to revolutionize the commercial vehicle sector through the development of Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) platforms. These new architectures are designed to deliver advanced, standalone digital applications directly to customers, ensuring compatibility across the global market.

While the joint venture is rooted in Volvo and Daimler, its market scope is global. Coretura is actively pursuing partnerships beyond its founding companies. The firm is currently in discussions with truck manufacturer Iveco and several Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) regarding collaboration on SDV architecture. The goal is to source and integrate the best technological solutions from around the world, specifically mentioning India, Europe, and the United States.
